February Women’s Newsletter

Hope everyone had a lovely break over the Christmas, New Year and holiday season. Now we are back into another golfing year at Duntryleague. The year has already been busy and no doubt will continue that way – we have so far had the West Orange Motors Duntryleague Classic, the Silver Teams event and Opening Day.

Points of Interest and Results

  • The Silver Teams Event was held on 3rd February and there was a chilly breeze all day but so much better than the rainy days of last November. November was when the event was scheduled but floods and closed roads stopped that idea. So finally it was played with women from throughout the Central West coming to Duntry to test their skills. The low markers of Duntryleague  showed their supremacy and earned the trophy. Players on our team were Susan Fenwick, Jo Hunter, Sally Kay, Virginia Conran, Glenda Hodge, Margot Sullivan, Taua Holmes and Michelle Paul. The best five scratch stableford scores were counted and the Duntry team got 111. Runners-Up were Dubbo with102. Susan Fenwick was the best on the day with 25 points, closely followed by Jo Hunter with 24 points on a countback.
  • Summer Points Nine Hole competition was held throughout January, played on Tuesdays. The best two rounds of a possible four are counted and the winner was Dot Tandy. Dot played all four rounds and scored 41 points with her score of 23 points on 10th January really putting her ahead of the pack. Congratulations Dot. This competition is sponsored by Maria Crawford and she presented Dot her prize and a beautiful bouquet of flowers on Opening Day. Thanks so much for your sponsorship Maria.
  • The Consistency Cup is also run during our holiday break and it is played on Thursdays throughout December and January. The best five scores (18 hole Stableford) are totalled to determine the winner. Lorie Leahey played well over this time scoring 176 points. Lorie only played 5 rounds but she made each one really count as four of her rounds were 36 points or better. Way to go Lorie.
  • The West Orange Motors Duntryleague Classic in January was again  very successful thanks to organiser extraordinaire, Helen Corby, and her hard working committee. There is a short report and lots of photos on the website for you to check out.
  • Invitational/ Opening Day sponsored by Roan Financial. On 7th February we had over 100 women come along to the annual Opening Day. Visiting players came from Cowra, Bathurst, Cumnock, Manildra and Wentworth. The weather was glorious, the course magnificent and everyone was in a friendly and happy mood – all glad to be back at our regular golf and catching up with friends. Jo Hunter had a good day with 76 scratch to win Division 1; Sally Gordon was Division 2 winner with 98 strokes and Division 3 winner was Julie Mendham on 104. These players also get to have a Roan Financial golf shirt embroidered with their achievement. There were many other winners on the day because on Opening Day we have prizes for the scratch event, handicap and also stableford events. The unstoppable Kim Pattinson won the 9 hole competition with 17 points. Well done Kim. Liz Stair was the lucky winner of the major raffle prize – a voucher for $150 from Rodney Clark. Our club is very fortunate to have so many generous sponsors.
  • Monthly Medal Number 2 ( remember that the first monthly medal was played back in the latter weeks of 2022). This month’s medal was sponsored by the Country Duntry Girls – thank you to Jenny Armstrong, Isabel Weston, Jenny Brazier, Bronwyn Brazier, Jenny Davis and Julienne Jackson. With this event we also see the start of the Eclectic count and the Birdies Board; as well as the first round of the WGNSW Medal. The putting competition that only runs on monthly medal days also started up again and thanks to Janis Pritchard for her continuing sponsorship of the putting comp.. The monthly medallist is Margo Snare with 70 nett. Well done Margo.
  • Medal of Medals for 2022 was finally played after the soggy course last year caused a postponement. Congratulations to Lindy Simpson who will have her name engraved on the trophy; Lindy won with her score of 74 nett. Thanks to the Medal of Medals sponsor Lisa McDonald.

Upcoming Events

  • Most Thursdays there is always a Stableford event for the women.
  • Canowindra is holding their Opening Day on Wednesday 15th February.
  • Regency Cup will be on Friday 17th February. This is an inter-club event held annually against Wentworth Golf Club. Sixteen women on either side battle it out in a 4BBB matchplay format. This year it is being held at Duntryleague.
  • On Tuesday 21st February there are course renovations scheduled so there will only be a 9 hole competition.
  • Tuesday 28th February is an invitational day for a worthy charity – Push for Palliative. Duntryleague women have supported this venture for a few years now and would like to think we can outdo ourselves for this year. All moneys from the sponsors and the raffle will go straight to the charity. Sponsors are Val Durack, Val Pollock, Billie O’Neil, Margo  Snare and Sally Heigh. The Committee are working hard to get some very enticing raffle prizes so please be generous and bring along plenty of cash on this day.
  • Hard to believe that I am going to mention Championships for 2023 but by the time the next newsletter comes out we will be starting the championships. The 72 hole event is set down to be held on 14th, 16th, 21st and 23rd of March. So be sure to pencil these dates in on your calendar. Lots of events are held in conjunction with the Championships including the third Monthly Medal on the first round of the Champs. This medal is sponsored by Tony Leahey Motor Group. Virginia Conran (Orange Self Storage) is our most generous sponsor for the overall champions and Robin Thompson and Sally Gordon sponsor the third round. The Mathews-Robinson trophy is sponsored by the Women’s President; this trophy is for the best total nett score over the four rounds and is open to all women irrespective of their division. The Senior Championship trophy, which only started last year, is also ready for another name to be engraved on it. The championship rounds (best two of four) are also used to determine who will play in  the matchplay championships. Looks to be a busy month in March.
  • Dubbo Women’s Opening Day is on Thursday 2nd March.
  • Wentworth Golf Club’s Women’s Tournament is on Sunday 12th March.
  • Parkes Annual Tournament is on Sunday 19th March. Details about out of town tournaments are usually on the noticeboard about two weeks or more out from the event.

Other News

  • Longstanding employee, Sue, who has been making our coffees for over ten years recently retired. We wish her the best for the next exciting phase of her life. Goodbye and good luck Sue.
  • The local vets week of golf now called The Central West Vets Week of Golf will be held 6th to 10th March. Play will be at Bathurst on the Monday, at Wentworth on Tuesday and at Duntryleague on Thursday  and Friday. This event is booked out at the moment – congratulations to the organisers because this event has been low on numbers for a few years. Good to see it coming back strong.
  • If you are interested in tournaments throughout the Central West there is a list of places and dates on the noticeboard. Flyers about each of these events will be placed on the noticeboard as they are received.
  • Just to let you know most of our competitions are now held in three divisions and the grades have been adjusted to a more traditional handicap range – Div 1 is plus to 22, Div 2 is 23 to 30 and Div 3 is 31 to 45.
  • On Tuesdays when we have a presentation and there are sponsors it would be lovely if as many players as possible could remain for presentation. If you think you may be in line for a prize and can’t stay, please make your apologies to one of the committee.

Happy Golfing. Cheers Sally H.
