I love the anticipation of a New Year. It is a great chance to re-assess, set goals and make conscious improvement.
Notice I’m not talking about resolutions. Resolutions are made to be broken right – a flippant I’m going to… which might last a month if you are lucky.
I’m talking about breaking it down. Decide what you want to achieve. Lay out the path to achieve that and follow the processes ticking off little milestones one at a time. Conscious improvement.
Only you can decide what it is you want to achieve. How was your golf over 2018? Did your handicap reduce? did it blow out? are you happy with your golf game? how often do you walk off saying I played well today? What do you want from your golf? Maybe you want to break 80? break 90? break 100? take 5 shots off? This is a personal decision. Ultimately it has to be something that you value. Answer this honestly of yourself – what do you want from your golf in 2019?
Once you’ve made that decision you can turn it into a goal – my goal is to… Great, you are on the board. Now the focus needs to shift away from your goal. It needs to shift to the process.
This is key to success. This is where a coach can really help you. How do you break down the journey from ‘where you are now’ to ‘where you want to be’ into little steps – to lay a path forward to achieving your goal. This is where most people come unstuck. The path is not clear, there are no little steps just a giant leap, they lose motivation because they aren’t ticking off the little milestones to get the feedback to stay on the path, they don’t even know where the path is, it is just a chasm.
A skilled coach can help you map out what needs to be done to get you where you want to be. A skilled coach can also help you at regular intervals along that path, keeping you on the track and helping you achieve little milestone after little milestone, that build on each other to create lasting improvement.
Over the course of last year, I successfully coached the 3rd most improved golfer in Australia – we are talking a 13 shot reduction in 12 months. We did that through conscious improvement. A commitment to the pathway laid out and ticking off little milestone after little milestone.
There is no magic panacea, no magic move or quick fix. No one magic drill or coaching aid. There is a clearly laid out path by a skilled coach and a commitment to that path by the player. The coach analyses, plans, instructs and demonstrates and the player (YOU) – absorbs and applies. The goal then looks after itself.
