Men’s Golfing News- October

The Spring weather conditions have certainly induced many golfers to return to the fairways following their winter hibernation. Many members have dusted off their clubs, cranked up their practice routines and the resultant scoring indicates we are all in for a very competitive summer. Its fair to say that if you’re looking for a podium finish a score better than your handicap will be required with most winners during September scoring above the 40 stableford points mark.

Kicking off the month James Bird was the Pave and Scape Monthly Medal winner with a tidy 73 scratch score and a nett 67. He got the gong over Hamish Goff with a 68 net on a countback from Club legend WG Carpenter who returned a sub par 69 from his 1 handicap.  Carpo did however collect the best scratch score prize for his impressive round which included an eagle 2 on the short 14th.

As reported in our last news update, our “professional amateur” Robert Payne teamed up with the Club Captain Dennis Schultz in our Tooheys Foursomes Championship to record another Club Title. The Division 2 winners were John Bird and Jim Colgan continuing their long and successful sporting partnership across many sporting disciplines.

Graham Billing slipped in a very good 41 stableford points to lead the field home in the Rob Hewett sponsored competition on the 15th. Graham withstood strong pressure from Bob Brazier, Gordon Taylor and Rod Dean who all returned a commendable 40 points each. Not to be outdone the following week Wal Reynolds returned 42 points to continue the high score trend to win the Wolf Electrical sponsored event over Peter Bell on 40 points. Bill Foran, Don Pearce and Jim Fogarty all returned scores of 39 points to also share in the podium spoils.

Jock Sampson teamed up with Club stalwart Jim “The Squire” Lenon to win the Printhie Plate with an impressive 49 points in this newly established 4BBB competition. This pairing just survived a countback from Rob Williamson and the evergreen Freddy Tomley to come in second place over Peter Jurczyluk and Peter Turner on 48 points. Sampson and Lenon now advance to the Printhie Plate Final next July.

The City of Orange Golf Championship was conducted over the long weekend incorporating the 3 Orange golf courses. Robert Payne tagged another title returning a fine 111 points scratch stableford points to win this title for the umpteenth time. He backed up from yet another victory in the Dubbo Open the week before and seems to be unstoppable at the moment with his renewed focus on his game following some recent distractions and substantive weight reduction. Jan Crichton from Killara Golf Club picked up the Ladies Championship with this event being strongly supported by many regular visiting golfers from across the Eastern States.

During this Championship local sporting retailer Sportspower  sponsored the Saturday event for Duntryleague members with Rob Payne, Andy McGeoch and Peter Jackson collecting the prizes. The Russell family have a long association with Duntryleague and were represented by Peter Russell who returned from Belgium to be at this event. Scott Ellis and the team at Sportspower area a welcomed new sponsor to our Club and will follow up with another members event shortly in appreciation of the Russell family at Duntryleague.

As we go to press our Mixed Foursomes Championship brought to you by the Rowan Cottage were completed on 7th October with new members Louise and Owen Dally claiming the title. Fresh into town and new members at Duntryleague, Louise and Owen were enthused  by their victory and look forward to playing with many new acquaintances at their new Club.
