Many of our golfers finished 2018 in style with some outstanding individual and team scores being posted during December and over the festive season.
Dennis Rose kicked off the month by winning the Marshall Law sponsored Monthly Medal with a fine 66 nett. “Rosey” was virtually the last card returned for the large field of players and with 6 players sitting in the Clubhouse preparing their victory speeches on 67 nett he certainly spoiled their party by coming over the top and sweeping the pool. James Colgan, Greg Spong, Jim Fogarty, Peter “Chicken” Ferguson, Peter Bell and Ron “The Badger” Pearson can all feel it little bit hard done by and lamenting that one shot that may have got them the Medal on the day.
Dennis now joins the other 11 Medal winners for 2018 and will contest the Medal of Medals on the 2nd February for the coveted Gold Medal.
The event sponsors acknowledge the late Kevin “The Sheriff” Marshall on this day in recognition of his fantastic assistance at the Club particularly in promoting and encouraging junior golf at Duntryleague.
The 2018 Mixed Christmas Cheer was proudly sponsored by Tony and Lorrie Leahy with a 4 Person Better Ball Stableford being this year’s format. Golf NSW Chair Peter Mitchell mustered a team together comprising Sally Laws with Rhonda and Mark Fardell and returned a brilliant 54 stableford points (a neat 3 points per hole best ball) to take home the major prize of the day.
Glenda Hodge teamed up with Peter Campbell and the husband and wife combination of Robert and Rosie Stott to collect the runner up prize with a healthy 49 points. A great day was had by all with a celebration BBQ on completion culminating with a “first use experience” on the newly constructed deck.
The biggest team event of the year was conducted on the following Saturday with the Fogarty Brothers sponsoring this great golf day via their IA Engineering business enterprise. Some early pace setting scores were established from the morning field as the afternoon crew primed themselves with a special demonstration by Rob Linklater giving a masterclass bar performance prior to proceedings. “Linky” was in full flight on the day and will be sadly missed by our golfing family as he now takes on a new career path but certainly exited the building in style. Thanks “Brother”.
The event was a 3 person Texas Shootout with the unlikely combination of Freddy Tomley, Rob Williamson and Robert Payne getting the large hams with 100 stableford points. These guys have been competing in this event together since 1994 so it was fitting that Freddy was the nominated speech maker on the day as he was simply sensational on the course with his steady influence and play. His emotional speech had the attention of all the members however it was rumoured he was really concerned on how he was going to consume the large ham before the defending the title next year.
The team comprising Jamie Widauer, Kurt Wolf and Luke Launders also returned 100 stableford points on the day and could consider themselves unlucky to not get the major prize with such a hot score. Josh Hurst, Tim White and Chris Paix collected 3rd place with 97 pts. At the end of the day 24 golfers went home with some type of ham for Christmas with a little head ache thrown in the next day so they knew the hard battle they had endured the day before.
The 4BBB Printhie Plate was played on the 19th December with Chris Herron and Geoff Newton collecting the Printhie Wines products with 48 stableford points to get home over Tim Nicholson and Bruce Butchman on 47 pts from Muji Burman and Graham Smith also on 47 pts. Chris and Geoff now advance to the Printhie Plate final to be held in July 2019.
The most outstanding individual scores returned for December included great scores returned by Kurt Wolf (43pts), Jock Whittle (44 pts), Ken Mattock (43 pts), with sub-par rounds returned by some of our elite golfers in Peter “Chicken” Ferguson, “Jimmy” James Conran, Andy Campbell, Robert Payne and our touring pro Steve Conran who had a blistering 62 off the stick on the 19th December. Good golfing by all to see the year out.
Hole in One:
Big congratulations to Bill Gollan and Rob Waddell for joining the Hole in One Club after both playing the perfect shot on our 7th hole recently. Great memories for each and both receiving a plaque for inclusion to their “Brag Wall” at home.
Australia’s Top 100:
Duntryleague has returned to the be listed in the Australia Top 100 Public Accessible Golf Courses for 2019. This listing compiled by travelling professional and amateur golfers and administrators is recognition of what a fantastic golf course we have in Orange and our course received a high ranking particularly in the course conditioning. A wonderful achievement for our Club and big accolades to Grant Barrett and his team at Fairways Course Management with the assistance of our many volunteers at Duntryleague.
We should continue to consolidate and improve our ranking which brings added benefits to our Club in remaining one of Australia’s best golfing destinations in Regional Australia.
